SCIM M - Retrenchment

A Brief Introduction of FLA Training Course on “Responsible Retrenchment”

1. What is this training about?

The global economic crisis has been causing a new wave of reductions in factory workforces and closures because of declining product orders. There has been a substantial impact on employment levels everywhere, particularly in the apparel and footwear sectors in the supply countries. Factory retrenchment – also referred to as redundancy or downsizing – or even closure has become almost an everyday occurrence in these countries. In a declining economy, suppliers are being forced to close factories or reduce capacity through the retrenchment of workers in response to diminishing product. The “Responsible Retrenchment” SCIM line training module was created by the FLA to assist supplier factory managers to respond to the situation in a financial viable and socially responsible way.

Step by step, the participants will go through the following issues and explore solutions that would guide their retrenchment/redundancy policy and practice back in their factories:

  • How does a company deal with excessive personnel?

  • What are the fundemental issues that a company need to take into consideration in a redundancy process?

  • What should our policy and procedure include?

  • What steps should be included in the redundancy procedure?

  • Who, when and what does the management consult?

  • What selection criteria can a company use?

  • What can a company do for those who leave?

  • Are there alternative measures to retrenchment?

  • How a Meeting with workers who are retrenched is planned and conducted?

  • What does a company with the Workers who stay?

2. Who should consider this training?

All levels of management and supervision who are involved in making retrenchment decisions, as well as worker representatives should be considered for this training.

3. How long is this training?

This is a one day training. Adaptation can be made according to actual needs.
